Coltrane’s “My Favorite Things” at 50

Next week — October 21, to be exact — marks the fiftieth anniversary of the recording of “My Favorite Things” by John Coltrane, with McCoy Tyner on piano,  Steve Davis on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums, for Atlantic Records.

In commemoration, here is a video of the John Coltrane Quintet (with Eric Dolphy on flute and Reggie Workman on bass, as well as Tyner and Jones), playing the tune for West German TV late in 1961.

Just want to thank you for sharing this amazing footage of John Coltrane. My husband and I turned off the lights, lit a candle and imagined we were in the club with that remarkable band. I’m sharing this far and wide.

    Hi Sean,

You mention you attended a screening of “a poem is a naked person”. Can you give a description of the movie and provide any updates on the possibility of getting this out to the public? Thanks, Jason
